My oil pressure gauge has always read really low and I thought it was just the gauge which has never really worked but my lifters have started to clack around alot. What all can cause a low oil pressure? I bought this engine as a remanufactured long block about 50,000 miles ago and it's just starting to get really bad. The oil pump was replaced with the new motor.
My gauge reads really high at startup (around 60-70 psi), then as I drive it will slowly sink down to near zero as it warms up. Not sure if this is typical of a certain failure. It does leak a little oil out of the back and I'm not positive whether it's the oil pan gasket or the rear main.

Sounds like a pump to me. If the problem had ALWAYS been there, I'd think a plug was missing in the crank journals.

welcome...
i learned that bearing going out/nearly gone, will show good pressure when the oil is cooler and thick...then as the oil gets warmer, the pressure goes down...i traded a vehicle in one time with this condition...just had to not let the dealer take it for a very long test drive...
mac '15-45 or 50 wt old will hide the problem somewhat too' gyvr

Thanks for the help guys, I'm going to dig into it tomorrow hopefully. Can a leaky rear main cause low oil pressure? I guess I just don't know where the pressure is developed in the engine.

Older Ford's are notorious for these exact symptoms. Especially the 351 and 400M's. Had a couple of them that would have great pressure upon starting but within a few minutes it was nearly nothing. Both of em spun a bearing and locked up.
