Post subject: Can I swap an np242 rear output shaft into an np231?

Anybody know? I've heard you can swap the input shafts. I have a spare np242, and a Hack and tap sye would be easier/cheaper on the 242 output than the 231. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Elaborate. Internally or externally. I would change the output shaft tail housing too. Just trying to figure out how to do away with the output shaft seal that goes around the slipyoke too.

the output shaft is different due to the way that the 242 has full time and the 231 is only part time...

the 231 wasn't internally sealed without the need for a driveshaft until 1996 in xjs and 97 tjs.

the hack and tap for 231s have an external seal that comes with the kit prior to 96 to seal it with the sye...

I gotcha, I would need a later 231 output shaft and tail housing, and that would be more money than the more expensive kit. Thanks Mac!

Not sure on there price now days or there customer service, but I bought a SYE for my YJ from Performance Off Road Center for $189 shipped. But i have heard lots of people complain about there service lately so i dont know if it would be worth ording from them anymore or not. Might be something to check into though... :tu2:

In my XJ, I haven't lengthened either driveshaft, I haven't dropped the t-case, I haven't touched the pinion angle, Haven't touched slipyoke other than new u-joint, and have no drivetrain vibes to speak of. I figure, now that I've done my control arms, I figure I've still got a bunch of work to do before she'll perform up to her limits. Which weak link should I address next?
