This is the first time I have ever heard of this, so bear with me if it sounds like a dumbass question.
I went to Advance to pick up an oil change for the Mustang. I grabbed 3 quarts of Castrol Syntec 5w30 & 3 quarts of Castrol Syntec 10w30 (they were out of the 5w30). The guy behind the counter said that you can mix flavors but not weights.
I've done this a boatload of times because they never seem to have enough on-hand when I go in there.
Have you guys heard of this? If it's a bad idea, why?

from a user view point i have mixed brand and viscosities in my vehicles and never had a problem.
Not using the right oil viscosities will just allow for more usage of the oil. Meaning that normally lets say you use 0.5 qt every 3k. using the wrong weigh could make the consumption 1qt every 3k. This i saw often while working at the ford dealer and that is what we were taught going through the ford classes.

you can mix weights, you do NOT want to mix brands. each brand has different additives. the weight is no big deal, as long as you mix the same rating style. ie... 10w30 with 5w30. do NOT mix a winter weight with a straight weight. ie... 10w30 with 50. the straight oil weight is missing some additives that the winter weight has. what you do in this situation is produce a gum substance when the temperature gets down to 20 degrees.
as long as we are on the subject, there is no difference between auto oil and motorcycle oil. as a matter of fact mobile one is better for bikes than motorcycle oil.

See, that's the exact opposite of what the parts jockey told me.
I'll keep doing what I have been doing then. I've never had a problem mixing weights.

I 90% with this (everything but the motercycle oil part) Motercycles use their moter oil in the transmissoin also. An improper oil in a Motercycle will hurt the transmission. Mobile 1 and Amsoil will work in a motercycle.

I don't know about mixing motorcycle oil, but I've mixed brands, weights, and pretty much anything you can think of. Hell if it uses enough don't bother changing the oil just change the filter
