Well I figure I would put this up here, already got one going on the KJ forum..Anyway starting with a stock KJ 2004, 3.7L, auto, 231 t-case, C8.25 rear, D30 front, 3:73 gears. So far I have added a front engine skid, and mopar tow hooks up front.
the "starter pics"
Image
Image
first part came in, the front engine skid..
Image
got that all mounted up
Image
skids for the 04 and older libb's are hard to find, but this one lines up for the most part. gotta drill a hole to fix this
Image
the difference
Image
Then the tow hooks came in. started by taking off the liscense plate bracket
Image
Then lined all my parts up for each side
Image
I got one mounted up and decided to call it quiets for that night
Image
the batterys in my camera started to die, I guess the pictures get fuzzy when that happens
Image
Anyway they are all mounted up and I decided to check the ball joints on this mug, since it will be getting wheeled
Image
turns out the pass side is bad, lower one, with the help of geekyjeep I checked to see if it has had the recall done on it and it doesn't so I will be getting that shit fixed for free yo...thats all for now, gotta order my tranny skid and get that mounted up, then make a flag mount and she will be ready to wheel for now..

I got rear recovery point now...
Image
for my own reference, stuff I need to get done before the trip
Fix lower ball joints
buy and install tranny skid
drill hole in tire carrier for my flag mount

anyone know if they make CB antenna mounts for these? I dont really want to drill into the body in order to mount one, and magnet ones I worry will rough up the paint up top..

ya i marred the crap out of my paint with my magnet one. (goes along with the trail rash)

i have seen people get long hex stock and thread it into one of the spare lugs..

there is a cb mount that you have to drill for that goes in the rear gate..

what about drilling a hole in the spare tire carrier and running your antenna off of that? Thats how mine was on the TJ.
Then just slide a racket ball over the antenna to keep it from beating the back of the Jeep.

i dont know how well they work, but they have ones that stick to the window. The antenna sticks to the outside, an another part sticks to the inside with the cable attached to it

just a random photo, we always have some kinda jeep at my place..buddy stopped by with his cherokee, we put a pass side flare on it tonight..
Image
anyway last thing for tonight, I got my flag mount made, simple really just drilled a hole in the tire carrier and mounted it that way, not the best but it works for now. they look weird with no rear tire..
Image
all mounted up
Image
Image
and yes I took it back off, while I have seen jeepers do it, I just can't drive around town with a flag mounted to my jeep, for wheelin use only..thats all for now.

I would be very very carefull on what you call a recovery point. It is most likely only good for about 3500 lbs of pull. I would hate to hook up to that and have it come loose and fly at me. A 4000 lb vehicle at 5mph can generate well over 10,000 lbs of force on a tow strap.

I just read an article on a guy with a Land Rover towing out his buddy with another Land Rover have the D ring, the tow hook and the chassis mount come through his back window miss his head by a few inches and go out his windshield :eek2:

I believe he is saying that you will want a bigger hitch on there - like a class 3 or bigger.

Slide underneath and read the specs on the hitch and see what the towing capacity is. IF it is a class 3 hitch it has a 5000 lb rating and max of 500 lbs of tongue weight.

Look at the paper work for the adapter and see what it is rated for. I bet it is a thin hollow tube and it is not rated over 3500 lbs

You should run at least a 5/8 D ring which has a 3/4 pin and those are only load rated to 10,000 lbs

Remember that the whole assembly is only as strong as it's weakest part.

The new JK I drive says in the manual to use both hooks in the front when attaching a strap to it to pull it out if it gets stuck. Those hooks are bolted to a real frame with 4 half inch bolts each. That hitch you have is only bolted to sheet metal. I have ripped that type of hitch off of a full size Dodge van trying to get a stuck reciever out and those were class 5 rated.

I was just trying to save you guys the possible maiming and disfiguring injuries associated with broken stuff flying off connected to a big rubber band that is aimed at you.

IT will possibly come off if tugged on too hard. . . :eek2:

This is from their description( •Computer-aided design and fatigue stress testing ensure a strong design that will withstand road abuse within specified capacities). IE not designed to haul either your ass or your buddies ass out when stuck in an offroad situation.

So if you have a strap rated at 20,000 lbs A D ring rated at 10,000 lbs an adapter rated at ????lbs and a hitch bolted to sheetmetal rated at 5000 lbs which will break first?

It will look something like this

i really understand waht you are getting at.
but.

waht options do we have?

simply not wheel because we are on unibody? by that philosophy the xjs would be ripping out thier tow points too.

I have already ripped the front one out of my XJ. I just wanted to let you know that you need to be FREAKIN careful because they are not as strong as you thought!!!

ohh i see.. ya i knew they arent as strong as a framed pull..

we just dont have any other options ya know?

our tow points are atleast designed as tow points and not anchor points like on that one car that got tis rear end torn off..

thanks for the heads up. :2up:

You can add braces to it and attach them to it. My XJ front bumper has d-rings on it but it says to not use them without buying the frame tie in brackets. (extended brackets that also mount further back and in more holes) Check the KJ forums as somebody probably has a good fix idea.

Or you can make a reinforcement plate that spreads the load evenly across the entire attachment area. This would replace the weld nuts or nut inserts that usually are used to attach the hitch or tow hook to the sheet metal stamping that is the unibody/subframe. I don't know if the KJs have an opening in the frame that would be big enough to do you any good, but on the XJs, there is an oval opening at the front of the subframe that was large enough to slide in a 12" long 1/4" plate that was drilled to match the attaching points on the tow hooks and also tied into the mounting locations for the sway bar and steering/pitman arm and had grade #8 nuts welded to the back of it. The idea is to sandwich the sheet metal firmly between the hitch or tow hook and the reinforcement plate. The bigger the area of sheet metal you can get between this sandwich, the stronger it will be.
The most common way for a sheet metal attachment to fail is for one of the bolts to pick up an excess portion of the load and start to tear or bend the metal. From there it's a chain reaction failure as the load is then transfered to the next bolt, which fails, and the next, and.... A reinforcement plate helps to keep the load evenly applied to all of the bolts.

in the front "frame" there are two holes that are often used to reinforce front bumpers, attachments, hitches, etc.

im not aware of any on the rear, but there also arent many people who take off their rear bumper.

ill see if i can research this.

im all about reinforcement

only if you know how ( nope most buy REFURB ( not new) replacement CV shafts)

the refurbs are rebuilt factory cv shafts

the new ones are a shitty knockoff.

Well I looked it up on the how to's, doesn't look like too much of a pain to replace. Just kinda seems dumb I have replace a whole axle shaft because of broken boot Boogers and shit!!. Oh well do what ya gotta do right.

the boot gets cracked.. grease goes out.. dirt goes in
less grease plus dirt = sandpaper on those parts...

yes you can replace just the boot..

BUT

how much damage has been done to it?

If its just a torn boot, there is no need to replace the whole shaft. Yes, they do not sell the whole boot just for a Jeep, you'll have to find one from a front wheel drive car or something.
As long as the boot hasnt been torn for a long time, you'll be set.
When dad had his ZJ, on more than one occasion he had torn a boot, he just inspected the joint, if it was still tight, he cleaned it, greased it, and installed a new boot. I believe that the new boot he used from a Geo Metro or something.
Take the old boot off and go to a friendly part store that will let you dig around on thier shelves until you find a boot that is similiar.

For the ZJ I got ZJ specific boots from Fort Wayne Clutch. Might start there for the KJ.

On the "Find a store" page, click the lower link to shop online and then it'll work

Mmm...not sure what happened there. But go to Napaonline and search CV boot for your Liberty and it will bring up both Left and Right CV boots. THey should be like $16.99 or something like that. Not sure if there is a differnce between the inner and outer but I dont see why they wouldnt work.

Sooo am I the only one not seeing a tear in the boot? I see shiny spots where it has rubbed against its self due to the saggy suspension but I still don't see the tear... :?

grease on the inner boot indicates there is a tear..
i may see a tear on the outer boot ( crack ) on the ring closest to the shaft.. but id want to get my hands on it to be sure.

Probbely either a franken lift or a lift from Jeepinbyal.com..whatever lift I get I want to throw a set of his A- arms on it too. Looks to make changing the ball joints a shit ton easier.

The Libertys love those tires. The BFG Long Trails were crap, but the ATs that I threw on mine are doing great!

I have to agree. Plus, if you do a 5 tire rotation, you'll go longer until you have to buy new tires.

The KJ got a set of new hubs.. wasn't too bad of a job..
Image

Still need to get the lift put on, its just kinda harder with the KJ being IFS because I have to take the struts to a shop to be taken apart and the new springs put on the new struts. With having a kid, we can't be down a vehicle.. so hopefully when I have a week off in august I can get the lift on. hopefully..

You are correct we could and had to when the TJ was throwing fits. It did indeed suck, and cooper hated us for it. Thats the main reason why we aren't getting rid of either Jeep when we get our JK. So one can be down for a minute if need be and still have two vehicles..

The KJ is getting an OME lift and new upper a-arms. JBA beefy a-arms. It will also be getting new CV's as the ones in it have a crap ton of play. I'm very excited to get wrenching on it. (note, the rest of the stuff pictured is for the JKU)

Yeah I never ended up installing that kit on the KJ. Mostly because I never bought the front shocks I needed. Sold it for what I paid for it on flea bay, worked some overtime and got the OME. For both jeeps

I finally got around to replacing that passenger side valve cover gasket.. I think it's kinda fixed.. still smokes every now and then so I'm kinda waiting to see if it's still just burning off old oil and coolant. I don't really want to have to take everything back apart..

Plan is to get the new springs and stuff on "soon" lol
