This space reserved for the "J4L School Bus to Hippie Camper Build Thread".

We should have it here at the homestead and start tearing into the project in just a few business days.

Miles? Engine? What did you give for it?

I love it.

What year is it?

That is a turbo motor with an intercooler right?

The motor alone is worth what you paid for the bus I think.

Honestly I haven't looked into the engine specs yet. Out priorities were based on the interior and lift when picking one out. It does have an intercooler. I saw that walking around it.

We were looking originally at a shorter one. But this one had more potential and a lower price.

First, I think with your priorities you lucked out on a good power train combo. Nicely done.

Second, enjoy taking all those seats out.

Third, stop by Three River's paint in Fort Wayne at Wells and Fernhill and talk to Tommy. Tell him your Jeep buddy that's a public servant, sent you. Get his opinion on how to paint that sucker. I'm sure that he will recommend sanding it all. I don't know if it will need a primer or not. You'll want to discuss that with him. I would resist spray bombing it. I've seen buses with spray bomb, it looks good for a year or two and then the paint goes to crap. I bought a paint gun from him for less than $50 bucks. I'd paint it with that. Tell him how big that sucker is and he will tell you what paint he would recommend, how much, and how many coats. Anytime that I have followed his instructions with paint, it's always turned out well and lasted a long time. He likes to talk, so give yourself plenty of time. He knows his stuff.

Fourth, I got a real nice respirator from Lowe's for $30 or $40 bucks.

We are looking at our options on painting, but we are working on the interior first. I will get with him though and see what idea he has. We are thinking about air spraying and airless spraying. Depending on price. If it comes down to it last minute, we will just lay on a coat of primer to cover the orange. But inside has to be done take it camping. So that's where we are starting.

The first seat is officially out. (and most of the rest are half out.)
Then right after the first picture, the wife found a four leaf clover.

the whole seat, or just the padded butt part?

the mettle frames are already promised to lew and joe for hard luck designs.

we are keeping two for a booth and two for a new barn shop seat, but they are getting the rest in exchange for some fab work.

the butt parts, however, are wood and padding and i will have 9 of them minus what i use to make seats from my empty kegs.

Well, I was thinking the whole thing, but I could probably fab up something for just the pad part?

I will let you know what we end up with.

I have a lot of kegs that need padding. Haha.

I have two with paperwork to return, and the one current tapped. But I have a few realm clean and new looking Warbird kegs, that I specifically saved to turn into seats. It will depend on how they match up with the cushions whether I use one cushion per keg, or per two kegs.

The weather finally broke, and we have several good, warm, dry, sunny days ahead.

Anticipate several updates about progress.

Things kind of shut down with the cold, wet, snowy weather for the last 10 days. The wife is the one who climbs under the bus to wrench out the seats, and she just wasn't havin' it. But it will be warm the next few days. We hope to have the seats out by the weekend, with lots of pics.

There will most definitely be a painting party on an upcoming saturday afternoon, with beer and bonfire on tap that evening. But we have decided to get the interior done first, or at least gut the beast. Since we already have everything we're going to use in the interior this (music festival and camping) season, getting the seats out are priority 1, and then we can take our time arranging the interior while we mask off the exterior. Then paint. Then ready to go.

If only you had a large barn or something you could park it in...

Moving on.

It was a nice day, so we went out before dinner and got more done. :)

This is Emmie. She's a rescue that we brought home last week. She is either 4 or 8. The paperwork for her and the paperwork for her chip contradict, but she has really great teeth, so we're betting on 4, even though when we got her we thought she was 8. She's one of the smartest, sweetest, chill dogs I've ever met. She's been warming up to us and her new home all week. She doesn't like being alone yet so we brought her out to hang while we did more work.

We got a few more seats out, in the short time we were out there. Julie was amazed at how much more room is starting to "happen" as we get more out. If both rows were out as much as the one side, we would have room for the bed already.

We have a few seats out, so we brought a new one in. We got lucky in a few different aspects when we picked out this bus, but my absolute favorite "this was meant to be" moment was when it became clear that the wheelchair straps on the floor up front were perfect for my two rolling benches I made from the benches we took out of the Vamper. The wheel chair strap downs are ideally spaced to strap these two benches (only one in place in these pictures) in place to have secured seating with seat belts while driving, and once we get to camp, they can be easily unhooked, rolled out and lowered with the lift, and used as camp seating. There are three of these sets of wheelchair spaces. Currently the plan is to use the two behind the driver seat for the rolling benches out of the Vamper as seat belt seating, and leave the one beside the lift for various other things depending on our trip and destination. It is the same size as the bench in these pictures, so we could easily take a propane grille, a scooter, a rolling tool chest... whatever. The lift really makes anything an option.

Also, there is a Julie hidden in two of these pictures. Can you find her?

And it is officially time for the fun part. :)

This is the bed riser I built for the Vamper.

This is a riser I built for the rear of the Vamper, for the chuck box and cooler.

These things took up the entire back of the Vamper, and now they look tiny.

Another piece from the Vamper. Some minor modifications and it will be a closet.

Do all of the lights and stop arm still work on it?

Currently, yes. However that has to change before I can plate it.

We are simply going to paint over the lights and remove their fuses, then remove the stop arm completely, and paint the bottom half of the bus black. Then we have a cop come and inspect it to make sure these things are done, and then I take that inspection sheet to the BMV with the rest of the paperwork.

That super bright ass fog strobe on top, however... I'm pretty sure we can keep that functional. :)

You should take a video with everything on and blinking. :)

There was a chance that getting plates might take up to two weeks, and have to be processed at the BMV HQ in Indy, so we hurried the 'get the bus compliant' phase.

-Stop arm is removed.
-Top flashy lights are painted over and disabled.
-Bus has been painted so as to not be mistaken for a school bus.

Doug T. Bus is now insured and plated. :)

Now we will be finishing up with another coat of the black all the way around, finishing up the trim work, and painting the top half of all three doors black.

In the meantime, not super pretty, but here's Doug.

The interior setup is starting to take shape. We at least can load a cooler and some necessities and take off any time we want. Now I just have some cabinets to build for the kitchen and closet areas, and Julie has some work to do on drapes and decorating.

We have a music festival planned for Memorial Day weekend, but we're going to take it to a local campground next Saturday as a maiden voyage and to make any final adjustments before a weekend long trip in another state. :P

I have some questions.

Are the sides of the bus insulated?

Wouldn't black make it more hot in the summer?

Are you gonna tint the windows?

Are you gonna add a generator? Solar panels?

Are you gonna add a Portable A/C?

Just a couple things things I thought of after this weekend being rather warm.

I have some answers.

They seem to be.

The top will be white, eventually.

No. But we're going to put some form of drapes throughout.

Solar.

No. It is practically made of windows, and has two emergency port holes in the roof that fully open.

:)

Anyone who has ever built a Jeep, or customized a mini truck/car, or even started tuning... knows that at no point do you ever hit 'done', but only stop doing the initial transformation from normal to 'your vision'. You start with a lump of clay and begin making what you want, and there may be lots of changes between lump of clay and 'your vision'. But at some point you hit a sort of plateau, where all or most of your 'vision' is in place, but you are still not quite 'done'....... ever. There will always be things that you think of adding on later, or minor details that you think are finished, but you end up changing at a time in the future... "Absolute Finished" (like absolute zero) is only achieved in extremely rare cases. There are always things that come up, changes you make from experience driving/wheeling/surfing pinterest, that you modify, bolt on, or fab up later.

I believe that this is where we have the bus, as of tonight.

We are going on a local (<10 mi away) camping outing with our friends Andy and Laura (some of you have met) this weekend Fri and Sat night. We have just about everything we can think of in place and ready for full bus functionality as we had planned it. There are an exception or two, but this is more or less a dress rehearsal for next weekend, when we haul off to another state for a 4 night, 3 day trek to our first music festival of the year. (Dark Star Orchestra Jubilee, if you are curious. Yes, we're hippies, if you didn't decipher that from the fact that we're making a camper out of a school bus. :P ) We have more things on our to do list, but almost all of them fit into either the "doesn't apply to 90% of the trips we have planned for this summer" or "we think we want that, but only real experience living in the van a few days will prove it or not" categories.

Oh, and one more exception. Tomorrow (Friday) afternoon before we leave, we will have drapes along all the windows, and a curtain up that blocks off the bedroom area in the back, before we roll out.

Everything permanent, except curtains, is in this picture. The couch is on a riser mounted in place similar to the original seats, with 9" tall storage under the entire length. The riser on the lower left is atop the wheel well and the center heater, with 9" of storage between the two. That particular riser on the lower left will also hold the solar battery and our travel fridge, which wont be permanent. There may be a picture or two of each of those in my J4L Vamper thread. Also of note, I don't know if you can tell from this picture, but there is a clear line where the led lights on the ceiling meet the forward side of the ceiling emergency exit portal. This is where the curtain will go that separates the bedroom from the front of the bus.

One of the "we think we want that, but...." things on our list is this (in my own opinion) gloriously wicked awesome closet, storage, super amazing pile of wood and screws that will go where the obvious cloths hanger bar is in this picture over the driver side wheel well. But no one has seen it yet because it is still only in my brain. I think it would be just super darn cool to leave for a camping trip not throwing bags into a trunk, but packing socks, undies, shorts, shoes, etc, into a compact and organized space. However, there are plenty of other ways to use that space, so I am putting that on the side for now. Also of note in this picture. The darker purple fabric haning on the left side of the rear window (from the camera's viewpoint) covers the center rear window. Which makes the bedroom area dark and amazing.

This is pretty much it without the "woman's touch" I keep hearing that it will get tomorrow or next week. But we know we have a lot to learn from it. Every time we, or I, camped in the Vamper, it taught us something, and we improved on our strategy or functionality in the Vamper for the next journey. Because of that experience we have left a lot of things about the bus "open", because we know every journey will teach us something about living out of the bus that we couldn't have ever pre-imagined beforehand. :) But this is where she is. I will have a few more pictures to post after this weekend, but as we enter that plateau, all that will be left are the finer details, here and there. Oh and just WAIT until I have that movie screen update. ;) I'm cooking up something you wont BELIEVE!!

Maiden voyage complete.

Camped nearby here Fri-Sun this weekend. The bus is going to work very very well as our camper. :)

When I camp I unplug, so I pretty much didn't see my phone except for a few minutes before bed each night. So I only have one picture from the whole trip. hah.

Our kitchen.

It was un fucking believably fun. We basically created a party pad on wheels, and can drive it wherever we want.

Everything in the bus has storage room underneath it.
We don't have to "transform" it before and after a trip like the vamper. Everything in there, stays in there.
We drove it to the campground, parked, put up some curtains, took my chair out to the fire pit, and it was cocktail time.
A little later it started to sprinkle, we grabbed an easy up and put it up. Sat morning we put another up really quick for more shade.
Sunday we had two easy ups to fold and two chairs to grab for 'tear down'.

There is room for 10 people to sit on the 2 van benches and the couch. Room for 2 to sleep on the bed, one to sleep on the couch, and possibly another two to sleep on the van benches, if they are small or drunk enough.
Fridge, cooler, solar power (when there isn't power at the camp site), microwave, coffee maker... and inside the brown chuck box is storage for all the food/cooking related stuff, stove, batteries, etc.. All in that picture above.

It is pretty much the most amazing awesome thing Julie have ever bought / built together, and we can't wait for more camping.

Which is good since the next 3 weekends are music festival, camping with Andy/Laura again, and another music festival. :)

How pissed would your neighbors be with this beast parked on the road beside your driveway from a Fri evening to a Sun morning? haha.

Oh man.. they are trying to sell their house too! With our luck, they would be having a showing.

"Umm.. is that big fucking bus always out there?" "No." "Suuurree. We'll be in touch." "Damn it."

HAH!

If I find myself with the opportunity, and the realtor is outside with someone, I'm shouting at your house "TOM! SHITTER'S FULL!".

If you do that, make sure you relocate one set of taillights deliberately down a few inches.

It would be stupidly easy on these. It hangs down and is completely away from everything - PERFECT for smashing on a rock.

First Music Festival was this weekend. Our target from the beginning to be ready to go to.

And we rocked it. And the bus kicks serious ass for a 3 night hippie fest adventure.

This was Thursday getting loaded. That's my view from the captain's chair.

I forgot my camping chair, but guess what the whole purpose of the lift and using these van benches as bus seating was all about? :P

Here is a shot of our camp site. 5000 hippies in rvs, busses, vans, trailers, and of course tents, gets crowded. But we had plenty of room between Lewie's Excursion and the bus.

This was also the Hoff's 6th music festival, not counting at least two Jeep Camps (when it wasn't raining). Lew brought a TARDIS. We were the cool kids for the weekend. :)

Second music festival. Blue Ox in Eau Claire, WI.
Three days and nights of bluegrass, folk, and some crazy stuff in between.

The newest addition to the bus:

When we're on the road, everything is stowed and the windows are all uncovered for full visibility.
But once we are parked, it takes Julie about 5 minutes to turn it into this.

At night, we have our Christmas lights, and a 4 foot 12v LED UV blacklight strip to jazz the place up a bit.

So interesting factoid. The black paint on the bus is actually chalkboard paint. :D :D
We did this:

And this happened. These are from different days. It rained and wiped the bus clean while we were there. :(

HAHA I was going to bring that up as well.

I was camping in the RV over the weekend. The house a/c ran from friday to Sunday without turning off once...it was HOT in southern Indiana...

If it was me, I'd keep an eye out for a roof top a/c for an RV. You could cut a hole in the top and slam it in the bus for a more permanent fix. Of course, I'm the guy that just put an a/c unit in his garage...

Yea yea yea.

My wife made that purchase. I just didn't complain.

It got up to 95 all three days we were there, but stayed below 75 in the bus.
